A Pair of Cuba-bound Humanitarian Sailboats Reported Missing after Leaving the Coast of Mexico.
A large-scale search and recovery mission is currently under way in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost boats transporting humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to the island of Cuba.
Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated
Authorities in Mexico has sent navy personnel and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board no fewer than nine total sailors, per a military release.
The ships had been scheduled to reach the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their docking, authorities reported.
Context of Humanitarian Support to Cuba
Cuba has leaned on Mexico's over the past few weeks, as the island grapples with repeated nationwide blackouts.
"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy commented.
The nine individuals on board are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexico said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their embassy officials.
"We are co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.
Previous Relief Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban government publicly celebrated and officially received another boat that had delivered a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That vessel, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, medicines, baby formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Broader Geopolitical Climate
Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, coinciding with the time a oil sanctions on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""critical" supply shortages, with over fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.
Diplomatic measures have increased in recent months, with remarks from various leaders underscoring the complex situation regarding relations.
In response to recent statements, a high-ranking Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that early stages of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains uncertain.
The naval forces said it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to discover the vessels and guarantee the well-being of the crews.
As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban leadership.
