Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, Adult Swim saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two additional seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the viewers of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He specifically highlighted the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you showed up for this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something deeply soothing about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing layer of irony. He linked this trend to a broader media landscape.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
Now, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa has the opportunity to catalyze that comedic shift. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences a little more time to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The complete first season is currently streaming on HBO Max.
