EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
