Liverpool's Captain Admits Team Faces Crisis, Challenges Teammates on Responsibility
The Liverpool skipper has issued a scathing assessment of the club's woeful title defence, admitting the title holders are in disarray and failing head coach Slot while doubting whether every player is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.
Van Dijk struggled to hold back his frustration after Saturday’s heavy loss at Anfield by Forest, a result that left Liverpool in the bottom half of the Premier League table with a negative goal difference. Tom Werner was present at Anfield to observe Liverpool’s latest loss in seven league games, their eighth setback in 11 matches across every tournament, and a performance that unravelled against a Forest side that started the day in the drop zone.
“Unacceptable” Start and Set-Piece Woes
The captain labeled Liverpool’s start to the second half as “unacceptable” and admitted “anxiety set in” as soon as Murillo gave the visitors the lead. Forest’s opener was the ninth concession Liverpool have conceded from a set piece in the current campaign.
“We had a productive build-up to the match but in a game you are dealing with facts and the truth is we conceded a free-kick in the opening period and a terrible goal at the beginning after the break,” said the defender. “As a team, we're definitely letting him down, but we’ve disappointed ourselves as well. Start with self-reflection and then you support teammates, you work together to escape of this crisis because at the present time it is a mess – that's the reality.
Captain’s Challenge: Take Responsibility
Van Dijk typically addresses the media after a game as part of his duties as Liverpool captain. Saturday was different, however. His voice was more forceful – so loud that any teammate in the stadium corridors could hear him – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the dressing room to react. “Anger is justified,” he emphasized. “The key point for me is that everyone has to be accountable.” Asked whether this is occurring, Van Dijk replied: “I don’t know. But it's essential. That's crucial I want the boys to do. It's challenging during tough periods but we have to do it if we want to get out of this.”
Summer Signings and Broader Issues
The Merseyside club spent almost £450 million to strengthen a title-winning squad in the summer but have gone backwards, with new arrivals struggling to contribute so far. Van Dijk maintained that Liverpool’s problems go beyond the recent additions. “It's difficult for all involved,” he said. “What I want is for each player to take responsibility on the pitch. This is necessary in order to push each other, to improve collectively. If a teammate presses, you have to follow the press. These are fundamentals but it’s not happening enough.”
Appeal to Stick Together
Van Dijk added: “This season we lack any consistency, we concede excessive scores, we are losing battles and everyone is responsible for it and I hope this is recognized. We have to accept duty to reverse the situation and tempting to assign blame but unity is essential. We have been through it together and won the league and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a tough time you have to stick together and not point fingers.
“You have to be a man and face the toughness and go again, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my view, because Liverpool has been going through many adversity over those years and we’ve always come out of it. However, that doesn't imply it is straightforward, it’s exhausting but there is no other way.”
Looking Ahead
Next up in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next Sunday, after the midweek visit of PSV in the Champions League. Van Dijk commented: “Wednesday is another game so how should I respond, go home and cry? No, I’m going to return and analyze how we can improve results and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
