Arrangements to hold LGBTQ+ rights events and activities throughout the city amid the upcoming World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations voiced strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations Alongside City Celebrations

Local organizers stated clearly they are “proceeding as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the fan activities outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated the vice-president of communications.

Legal Context of Objections

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be associated with events that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains operational control of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid political signage with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent tournament in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of flags being seized.
