The co-founders behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has stated that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for an innovative pro-Palestinian ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business alongside his partner, announced that he plans to independently develop this new flavor as part of a personal collection showcasing causes the company has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Between Creators versus Corporate Owner

This latest announcement escalates the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British packaged goods corporation that has owned the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders have claimed how Unilever and their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company from "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity

Mr. Cohen stated through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder stated in a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for permanent peace in Palestine while demanding repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for Palestinians due to its colors, that closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Previous Activism plus Recent Changes

In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales within disputed territories.

This upcoming dessert series will be created through Ben's Best, the socially conscious dessert company which originally established in 2016 to support former US presidential candidate Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".

Management Shifts and Future Intentions

The founder indicated how he will develop other frozen dessert varieties that address issues that the company was prevented from addressing publicly by corporate restrictions.

The announcement follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned from Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, citing worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.

At that time, Ben Cohen commented how "Jerry has a really big heart and the ongoing dispute with Unilever was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to continue to work within the organization to fight for its independence so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to journalists.
