The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... At the Moment.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would turn into a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the hit series reaching its finale—and a second season officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
One could easily to get distracted by the rampant praise and online debates regarding Pluribus. He is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being in a state of bliss,” he explains. “It's the greatest thing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would fall into and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan concludes.
The Big Question: Does Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering the writers are not listening by public opinion, does it imply they already know how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“There are some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I'd love for Carol to awaken with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.
