Our team is verifying video footage and photographs posted earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive explosion that authorities in Russia state killed a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the car that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to verify the location of where the images originated was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating additional structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified where the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not undergone manipulated.
