Trump Calls Relatives of Shot National Guard Members to White House
Former President Trump announced on the weekend that he has extended an invitation the family of a Guard member killed last week to come to the executive mansion.
He added that he contacted her family and they were “devastated”.
Background on the Tragic Event
US army specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a attack on Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her fellow service member, Staff Sgt Andrew Wolfe, 24, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
Memorials across the state have been held in their remembrance.
Presidential Offer
The commander-in-chief explained he’s discussed a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both soldiers of the West Virginia National Guard.
“I said: ‘When you’re ready, because that’s a tough thing, arrive at the White House. We’re going to pay tribute to her,” Trump told journalists. “And in the same way with Andrew, no matter the outcome.”
Public Response
Community members gathered over the past few days at Webster County high school in West Virginia to pay respects to Sarah.
Both she and Wolfe had been working with the military unit as part of the president’s national effort to assist law enforcement in Washington DC.
Honoring Sarah Beckstrom
“Sarah was the type of pupil that teachers hoped for. She behaved with quiet strength, a contagious smile and a optimistic attitude that encouraged people around her,” Hankins, the head of her alma mater, informed the Associated Press. “She was kind, considerate and always eager to support those in need.”
Service arrangements for Beckstrom are still being arranged.
Judicial Steps and Government Changes
Authorities have accused a 29-year-old Afghan national with one count of murder and charges of assault with intent to kill while carrying a weapon.
The incident prompted the Trump administration to halt refugee claims and cease issuing visas to owners of passports from Afghanistan.
Condition of the Airman
The airman, a native of Martinsburg, enlisted in early 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of Musselman high school, as reported by the AP.
He continues to receive treatment and is “battling to survive”, the state’s leader Morrisey stated on television.
Attorney general Pam Bondi stated on the program that she planned to visit Wolfe’s family.
Impact of Sarah Beckstrom
Beckstrom, from her hometown, graduated from Webster County high school in June 2023 and joined the military shortly after, working as a military police officer with honor, as stated by the military.
“She had a lot of compassion and she certainly had fortitude,” he told the audience at the memorial. “Though her time was cut short, she has created a legacy that’s going to endure.”
