Several days post the powerful storm struck the island's west coast with historic intensity, residents in devastated communities by the shoreline are persistently anticipating for relief.

Multiple routes are obstructed by wreckage and residents remain cut off with scarce supplies, lacking utilities, and unknown restoration dates.

Increasing Casualties

The government said on recently that at least 28 people in Jamaica have perished after the storm struck as a monster category five storm with 185 mph (297km/h) sustained winds.

This represents almost a 50% increase in the casualty count recently, and the number could rise as officials clear their way into new parts of the island in the near future.

Local Consequences

Westmoreland parish is thought to contain the next largest count of unconfirmed deaths, following St Elizabeth to the south east. The eye of the storm hit somewhere between the bordering areas. At St Elisabeth an approximately nine out of ten houses have been destroyed.

A considerable highway traveling westward toward the affected parish travels through a graveyard of trees – stacks of branches and limbs, cracked and twisted, covering the terrain extensively.

Piles of debris are accumulated beside the area's thoroughfares, adjacent to damaged structures, shipping crates turned on their side and local inhabitants moving through the ruins.

Immediate Challenges

Those living in Whitehouse, a seaside community and business center on the edge of Westmoreland Parish, say the time until relief arrives is becoming frustrating.

Crop Damage

Similar attitude appears struck by Oreth Jones, located in his transport distributing salvaged crops – the last of his produce that was spared from the storm.

Regarding his agricultural land, he said: "Total devastation occurred. They all destroyed" But he quickly followed up with: "We need to appreciate being alive"

Foreign Aid

At the same time, external support is commencing delivery into Jamaica.

American authorities announced that its crisis response group had reached the island. Nations such as Britain have also promised significant monetary support and emergency supplies.
